COCKATOO COLAB IS A PRODUCTION COMPANY THAT SEES STORY TELLING AND MEDIA MAKING AS WAYS OF BEING, COMMUNICATING AND BUILDING COMMUNITIES.

United by a shared interest in Human Centred Design and audience centred content creation, DR Marius Foley and Bec Bignell founded the Production Company Cockatoo Co.Lab in 2017. Design, storytelling and media-making are experiences that naturally align with innovation and change, they offer ways of listening that unlocks human invention. The foundations of Cockatoo Co.Lab were underpinned by their combined expertise in the fields of film and television, media design, digital distribution and commercial partnerships.

Over the past seven years Cockatoo Co.Lab original screen productions have been broadcast all over the world and have been acquired by broadcasters and streamers such as the BBC (UK), YLE (Finland), CBC (Canada), Network Ten (Australia) ABC(Australia), STAN (Australia), TVNZ (New Zealand) and Netflix ANZ and have screened at global and domestic festivals, both online and in-person.

Cockatoo Co.Lab also generates multi-platform distribution and release strategies for national and international screen projects, production companies and arts and culture organisations. We also coordinate future focused Film and TV workshops for large national organisations and small community groups.

regional roots…

Cockatoo Co.Lab works in close partnership with Rural Room, a remote creative agency and popular online platform that Cockatoo Co.Lab created to connect storytellers and geographically diverse audiences. Our intent is ultimately to create a progressive, dynamic, creative picture of life in regional Australia which extends beyond the stereotypes and negative perceptions that have traditionally perpetrated mainstream media.

The Cockatoo Co.Lab team is geographically diverse and has a proven track record of delivering projects remotely. Both Cockatoo Co.Lab’s and Rural Room’s value proposition and operating model was conceived as a remote working model and since inception have engaged contractors and collaborators from Blackall (QLD), to Hamilton (VIC), to Esperance (WA). Over this time we have been iterating on our ways of working, expanding our client base, bringing on more contractors and establishing how to continue to partner across regional and rural Australia.

Within this geographic diverse mix Cockatoo Co.Lab and Rural Room support lower socioeconomic creatives that can find it challenging to seek employment because of geographic boundaries and prejudiced perceptions. We provide an opportunity to partner with an innovative production company that is seeking to anticipate and deliver future focussed audience experiences and screen stories.

The Baudin and Carnaby Black Cockatoo of South West Australia are endangered.

Cockatoo Colab pays our respect to this bird in flight. It also represents marginalised voices, that are overlooked to the point of extinction…
